The Ultimate Guide to the Ferrari 166 Inter Sport
FERRARI 166 INTER SPORT– A FLEXIBLE V12 “CROSSOVER”
While the 166 Inter broke with tradition and offered buyers the first real chance to experience a proper roadgoing Ferrari, the 1948 Ferrari 166 Inter Sport did just what its model name would suggest and went straight back to the company’s roots. This racing car was designed for international competition, giving drivers a uniquely flexible platform that could be used in virtually any racing venue. The car’s party piece? Unlike other models of its time, the Inter Sport could be adapted for either single- or two-seater racing.
A CROSSOVER, OF SORTS
While the term “crossover” conjures up all sorts of frumpy, practical connotations today, the 166 Inter Sport was a different type of crossover entirely. Ferrari built this car with easily removable lights and mud guards, so owners would be able to easily switch between races with different requirements. A front-mounted V12 produced 130 bhp at 6500 rpm, not a bad output for a 2.0-litre engine. Like the 166 Inter, the sport model sat on a 2420 mm wheelbase.

It also used the same suspension setup: double wishbones up front with a live rear axle. Unlike that model, however, the Inter Sport did away with the fripperies that adorned the more comfortable, road-going car. Because of its lack of comfort features, the Thanks to its featherweight 630 kg dry weight, it could achieve a top speed of 215 km/h. I can only imagine how exhilarating it was to travel that quickly in a roadster built in the 1940s.
NEW STYLING
Although it shared a similar shape to the 166 S, the 166 Inter Sport’s detachable headlights and fenders give it a very distinct look. Add in the prominent vents situated behind the front wheels and the car takes on a whole new personal. Compared to Ferrari’s first offering, the 125 S, this model featured rounder, more aggressive styling that made a perfect match for the car’s feisty attitude.
