The Ultimate Guide to the Ferrari 328 GTS
FERRARI 328 GTS – EVERYONE WANTED A TARGA TOP FERRARI IN THE 80S
As was the case with the 328 GTB, the Ferrari 328 GTS was nothing more than a thinly upgraded 308. That might sound pretty bad for the 328, but it really isn’t. Sure, Ferrari could have created an all-new model, but why not carry on with their beloved 308 platform for a few more years? This Targa-topped version of the 328 would prove to be a hit with consumers, proving Ferrari knew exactly what they were doing. All said and done, they eked another 4 years out of the platform before transitioning to the 348.
PERFORMANCE
The most important update given to the 328 was the increase from 2.9 litres to 3.2 for the rear-mounted V8. In addition to the increased displacement, a new Marelli electronic ignition system was added to the mix. Power was thus increased by 33bhp, to 270 total, while the torque rating came in at 231 lb-ft. Matched against a kerb weight of only 1325 kg, the 328 was able to reach 62 mph in 6.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 263 kilometres per hour. A 5-speed manual gearbox was the lone transmission choice. Few other mechanical changes made their way into the 328.

STYLING
This theme of light updates continued with the exterior of the car. If you are looking for an easy way to differentiate the two, look for the slightly rounder, body-coloured front and rear bumpers. This gives the 328 GTS a softer appearance than the edgy 308 that preceded it. Few other changes made their way onto the Pininfarina-designed body. Thankfully, the interior updates were more thorough than a minor face-lift; seats, door panels, and switchgear were all new, providing a much more modern cockpit for the 328 driver.
PRODUCTION AND LEGACY
During its production run from 1986 to 1989, the Ferrari 328 GTS was supremely popular. Over 6,000 models were produced; nearly 5 times as many as the GTB. And despite its lack of originality, the GTS has remained a popular model with collectors. Chalk it up to the classic Pininfarina body combined with the car’s stellar reputation for reliability.
