The Ultimate Guide to the Ferrari 365 GTC4

FERRARI 365 GTC/4 – THE QUINTESSENTIAL 1970S FERRARI GRAND TOURER

As part of a long line of famous Ferrari 365 models, the 365 GTC/4 is a wonderful example of a 1970s Ferrari GT car. Stylish and powerful, the GTC/4 managed to tread the fine line between performance and comfort that makes for a great grand tourer.

POWER AND PAMPERING

The 365 GTC/4 was able to reach a top speed of 260 km/h (161 mph) thanks to its powerful V12. With 4.4 litres to work with, this Colombo engine was rated at 340bhp. And thanks to the use of side-draft carburettors, the designers at Pininfarina were able to give the 365 GTC/4 a low, swooping bonnet line.

Ferrari decided to give their new grand tourer slightly softer spring rates than previous 365 models. This, combined with its hydraulic power steering, gave 365 drivers an easier time behind the wheel – perfect for a GT car. In addition to the power steering, standard features also included aircon, and electric windows.

INITIALLY CONTROVERSIAL STYLING

Unlike the Scaglietti-built Daytona bodywork, the exterior panels for the 365 GTC/4 were not only penned by the experts at Pininfarina, but they were constructed there as well. The consensus among GTC/4 aficionados today is that this gave the model a higher level of built quality than the 365 models built by Scaglietti. While some observers mocked the car’s appearance when it debuted in 1971 (calling it the “hunchback), today the athletic wedge design is nearly universally praised.

The interior also featured a unique aspect: instead of leather, a tartan/leather combination was the standard interior trim. Buyers had the option of specifying a full leather interior if this unorthodox interior treatment rubbed them the wrong way. Owners quickly found that the rear seats were best used for storing items rather than people.

PRODUCTION AND LEGACY

The Ferrari 365 GTC/4 served as the precursor to the 365 GT4 2+2. Thanks to its longer wheelbase, that model offered a more comfortable rear-seat experience, although the styling suffered as a result. In its two-year model run, just over 500 examples of the GTC/4 were made. Recently, any of those models that have appeared on the used market have enjoyed climbing values, with
