The Ultimate Guide to the Lamborghini Centenario
LAMBORGHINI CENTENARIO – FLAMBOYANCE, FROM HEADLIGHT TO TAILPIPE
It’s hard to say what takes your breath away more; the styling or the price of the Lamborghini Centenario. Like other one-off Lambo designs before it (recent examples being the Sesto Elemento and Veneno), the new-for-2017 Centenario featured some of the most extreme looks to come out of Sant’Agata, with an equally striking price tag: £1.7 million. Marking the 100th birthday of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, the car’s name simply means “centenary.” You would expect the company to create a particularly special car for such an occasion, and it’s safe to say they rose to the challenge.
Let’s start with the power. A rear-mounted, naturally-aspirated 6.5-litre V12 makes 760 bhp and 507 lb-ft, giving the Centenario a 0 – 62 time of 2.8 seconds. Impressive figures, no doubt. The aerodynamics are really where the designers let loose, though. Up front, we have a massive twin-deck splitter that gives some intimidating teeth to match the glaring eyes of the headlights. Move to the back and you are greeted with a humongous diffuser and extendable rear wing. Even with all of the downforce generated by these features, the Centenario can reach a staggering 217 mph top speed. Huge V12s and big wings are nothing new for Lamborghini, however, so let’s move on to some of the new tech.

A rear-wheel steering system gives the car a shorter turning radius at low speeds and increased stability at high speeds. This system was clearly a winner for Lamborghini, as they would later use this system on the Urus. Inside resides a new portrait-oriented touchscreen that controls all infotainment functions. Of course, it also records your driving data for review after you are through putting the car through its paces on the track. Even with all of the added tech, extensive use of carbon fibre, much of it left exposed on the interior and exterior, means the car weighs in at about 50 kg less than the Aventador it shares its platform with.
With only 20 coupes and 20 roadster versions made, this is one of the most exclusive Lamborghinis of all time. So, getting a chance to experience this thrilling testbed of cutting-edge Lambo tech will be a real challenge for most of us. Still, it is easy to appreciate the Centenario from afar. A fitting tribute to the man who started the brand with a history of ostentatious designs, then.
