The Ultimate Guide to the McLaren 675LT

MCLAREN 675LT – NOT REALLY LONGER, JUST BETTER

If you were wondering, the “LT” in McLaren 675LT stands for “long tail.” At 1 mm longer than the 650S it’s based on, though, that can seem a very strange aspect of the car to name the entire model after. To understand it, you have go back to the F1 GTR Longtail models – those lightweight, even higher-performing versions of the iconic 90s supercar. So now “long tail,” in McLaren-speak, doesn’t really have anything to do with length: it’s all about performance.

A THOROUGHLY REWORKED 650S

With 650S underpinnings, 60% of the 675LT is all new according to McLaren. There are the upgraded carbon ceramic brakes, lightweight 10-spoke wheels, and a new rear wing. Meanwhile, increased carbon fibre usage helps reduce weight by roughly 100 kg. Power for the 3.8-litre M838T V8 has been upgraded to a wicked 666 bhp, while torque has gone up by 14 to 502 lb-ft. It seems that every aspect of the 675LT has been turned up, compared to the 650S. The 7-speed gearbox fires off faster shifts, and the titanium exhaust even produces a more menacing sound.

COMFORTABLE TRACK DAYS

A stiffer suspension and quicker steering rack liven up track days, but the car remains comfortable enough to live with in day-to-day driving. With the 675LT, McLaren manages to combinie hardcore track performance and all-day comfort into their suspension setup. Even with the myriad enhancements, many of the performance specs for the 675 are only incrementally better than those of the 650S, however. There is the .1-second faster 0 to 60 time of 2.9 seconds, the .6 second quicker 0 to 200 km/h time, and a top speed that is actually 2 mph slower (although 205 mph should be plenty for any driver). Indeed, overall track performance is what this car is all about, and it delivers, nearly matching the mighty P1 on several tracks.

CONCLUSION

Few cars truly rival the incredibly well-rounded Ferrari 488, but the 675LT might just be its fiercest competition. Of course, the McLaren also commands a staggering premium over the Italian. At £260,000 a pop, the Brit is significantly more expensive than even the new special-edition Pista. Still, the 675 is a highly impressive offering from a carmaker with a much shorter history than Ferrari’s.
