Bentley Bentayga V8 – The “Practical” Performance Luxury SUV
It hardly seems appropriate to mention practicality when discussing a £136,200 luxury SUV, but that’s exactly what the Bentley Bentayga V8 offers. You see, it’s all relative. Compare it to the other top-tier models from brands such as Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and even Bentley itself, and the V8 model starts to make a lot of sense. Many see it as the perfect blend of performance and rationality – not as slow and sedate as the diesel or hybrid, yet more economical than the V12.
And even though it isn’t the most powerful Bentayga, the performance isn’t exactly sluggish, with a top speed of 180 mph. Add in the flexible seating arrangements, enhanced fuel economy, and lower starting price, and you can see why even the ultra-wealthy could be swayed from the range-topping V12 option.
While the Bentayga V8’s powerplant is used in other VW group applications, it has been tuned specifically for duty in the Bentley. That means, according to the British automaker, that it offers drivers “effortless performance.” While I am not sure that the twin-turbo V8 ever feels strained in the Cayenne Turbo, I get what they are saying. Bentley, after all, is known for the smoothness of their power delivery.
In this guise, the V8 produces 542 bhp (550 PS) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque. That’s good enough to propel the 2,388-kg (5,264-lb) SUV to a top speed of 180 mph. Meanwhile, the spring to 62 mph is accomplished in just 4.5 seconds. While the V8’s performance is not as outlandish that of the 6.0-litre, V12 Bentayga, I reckon most owners will find it to be sufficient. And, as an added benefit, the Bentayga V8 receives a generous 3-mpg advantage on its EU combined fuel economy rating, at 24.8 mpg.
Inside, the Bentayga V8 maintains a highly luxurious aesthetic, although not quite as decadent as in the standard V12 Bentayga. Buyers are presented with 5 seating configurations offer either 4, 5, or 7 seats. Bentley has wisely limited the number of options when it comes to leather, wood veneers, and colours so as to set the £25,000 more expensive model apart.
