BENTLEY CONTINENTAL R – BRINGING BENTLEY BACK FROM THE BRINK
Bentley’s Continental R debuted in 1991 as part of the company’s efforts to re-invigorate the brand. After nearly two decades of stale, re-branded Rolls-Royces, the Continental R marked the return to unique, sporting models built under the Bentley name. As such, the “R” in the name stands for “roadholding,” harkening back to the athletic post-war Bentleys that set the standard for the brand. Indeed, while all of its models shine, Bentley seems to particularly excel in the arena of high-end, sporty luxury coupes. That’s why this model was so important to the brand’s efforts to forge its identity in the early 90s.
Under the bonnet is a turbocharged, 6.75-litre Bentley V8 borrowed from the Turbo R. While official power ratings were not released, in typical Rolls-Royce fashion, estimates pegged this engine at 325bhp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Along with that prodigious power, Bentley also gave the Continental R plenty of other performance features. Parts that today sound commonplace were cutting-edge back in 1991 when this model was new. The list includes an adaptive hydraulic suspension, a sport button, and ventilated disc brakes. Of course, the Continental R was positively dripping with the luxury accoutrements expected from the brand, so this is no lightweight sports car. Even so, reviewers delighted in the car’s finely-calibrated handling.
CONTINENTAL R PRICE AND PRODUCTION
While new model years invariably brought minor changes, 1996 Continental Rs were given a thorough update. Some of the new features included 60 more horsepower and 100 more torques. This brought the top speed of the big coupe up to 155mph, while the 0 to 60mph time dropped from 6.6 to under 6 seconds.
