In designing the 275 GTS, Ferrari had an entirely different goal in mind than it did with its Berlinetta-bodied sibling, the 275 GTB. Whereas the coupe possessed a newfound muscularity in its styling to go along with its more powerful engine, the GTS was softer from all angles. Not only did it receive different styling than the GTB, but the engine was tuned differently as well, favouring flexibility over all-out power. Ferrari could have just simply redesigned the body to accommodate the Spider top, but what they created was a vehicle with an entirely different character.
Down on Power
While the preceding 250 models used 3.0-litre engines, the 275 received a larger and more powerful 3.3-litre Colombo V12. Because this is the convertible-topped variant, however, Ferrari felt that 275 GTS customers didn’t need quite as much power, so the engine weas tuned to develop around 260 bhp compared to the GTB’s 280. To send that power to the wheels, a transaxle assembly was used for the first time on any road-going Ferrari. While common these days, this was a ground-breaking approach to automotive engineering in the 1960s. Another innovative feature was the independent rear suspension, which replaced the live rear axles that had been used on nearly every other Ferrari model up to that point. While these were new technologies for road-going Ferraris, they had been tested vigorously on the track as part of the company’s famous tradition of developing technology on the track prior to installing it on production models.
New Styling for the GTS
Pininfarina was responsible for the Ferrari 275 GTS’s exterior design. The Spider body was softer and more elegant than the muscular Berlinetta. Additionally, instead of alloys, the GTS was fitted with handsome Borrani wire wheels. With such different designs, bystanders would be forgiven for assuming the two cars are from entirely different model lines.
The 275 GTS remained in production from 1964 until 1966, with juts 200 models created. These models today stand as a testament to Ferrari’s close relationship with its customers. That they put so much effort into the car’s design shows that they were earnestly trying to meet their customers’ needs, and that we have two 275s with such unique characters is a great thing.
