The Ultimate Guide to the McLaren 570GT

MCLAREN 570GT – TAMING THE BEAST, EVER SO SLIGHTLY

That a car with the outrageous performance of the McLaren 570GT is marketed as the GT offering makes McLaren’s ethos crystal clear. Even in the car designed to feature all-day road comfort, they have kept enough performance baked into the recipe to keep it amongst the world’s fastest cars.

ABOUT THAT PERFORMANCE

In creating the 570GT, McLaren used the incredible 570S as their base, keeping the engine and gearbox identical, with the now-familiar twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 torque mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. With 562 bhp and 443 lb-ft on tap, performance is only a bit off the 570S: 3.3 seconds to 60, and an identical 204 mph top speed. As for track performance, it might not be the scalpel that the 570S is, but the GT can still hold its own, especially when specced with the optional carbon-ceramic brakes, racing seats, and P Zero Corsa tyres.

GRAND TOURING

So, can a hyper fast, mid-engined car with a top speed of over 200 mph really be a credible GT car? Well, McLaren has installed a host of features to make the car more comfortable. For starters, the steering has been dulled just a tad, enough to take that frenetic edge off. A softer suspension setup than in the 570S means the GT really can be used for road trips, as it provides more than enough comfort for all-day cruises. As for cargo room, McLaren really has made an effort, with a beautiful side-opening, carbon-trimmed glass hatch now providing access to a small “touring deck,” suitable for small-to-medium-sized luggage. To keep the cockpit airy, a new panoramic roof with 3 tinting options gives 570GT occupants a little more light to work with. Taken as a whole, the GT transformation was a complete and successful one; in the 570GT, McLaren has created a true grand tourer that just so happens to be able to destroy most other supercars on the track.

CONCLUSION

The £155,000 base price can easily be optioned into the stratosphere, so even this baby McLaren is a pricey proposition. But, as I hope has been made clear by now, the value is there. The 570GT is not just a low-effort new model to bolster the Sport Series line up – it’s the real deal, a bona fide GT car to compete with the world’s best.
