The Ultimate Guide to the McLaren P1 GTR
MCLAREN P1 GTR – MCLAREN’S HYPERCAR GETS THE TRACK TREATMENT
The McLaren P1 GTR could not have been created at a better time. It’s 2015 and all 375 P1 hypercars have been made, but the world wants more. Oh, and it also just happens to be the 20th anniversary of the famous F1 GTR’s debut in 1995; the same year it won first at Le Mans. Was this serendipity or a carefully-planned marketing manoeuvre? No matter, we are just glad it happened, because the P1 GTR is completely mental.
TUNING THE P1 FOR TRACK DUTY
While the P1 is not exactly uncomfortable clipping apexes on the track, McLaren was able to take the GTR to a new level, mainly because this track-only model was not forced to comply with any road regulations. Let’s start with the power: Although the company never verified the total output, reports show the McLaren P1 GTR produces 83 bhp more than its road-going sibling. Meanwhile, 50 kg have been eliminated from the car’s kerb weight. The usual track-oriented features were also installed, including slick Pirelli tyres, a large new fixed rear wing, and a performance exhaust. That wing is only part of a slew of aerodynamic aids that give the GTR 10% more downforce than the road model, for even more insane cornering speeds. Also new is a fixed-height race suspension that sit the GTR nice and low.

PERFORMANCE
With 986 horsepower on tap from its hybrid powertrain, the McLaren P1 GTR can hit 217 mph flat-out, and reaches 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds. As you probably know, those figures are pretty much identical to the standard P1. That it reaches the same top speed even with increased drag is actually an impressive feat – we have the wing’s F1-inspired Drag Reduction System to thank for that. Where the GTR really shines, however, is in the corners where those slick tyres and aerodynamic enhancements give it the edge over the street car. McLaren claim the GTR maintains grip all the way up to 1.54 G while cornering.
PRICE AND PRODUCTION
The P1 GTR’s £1.9 million price includes entry in a GTR-only track series. Those not wanting to participate in the series were later offered the P1 GTR at a significant £600,000 discount. By 2016, production of the McLaren P1 GTR had ceased after 58 cars had rolled off the assembly line.
