KOENIGSEGG CCXR – THE 1,000 HORSEPOWER TREE-HUGGER
To casual observers, there wasn’t much changed as the 2007 Koenigsegg CCXR was developed from the standard CCX model. The rakish profile and outlandish dihedral doors remained, after all. Ask Koenigsegg, however, and they will tell you at great length about why this new model is so special. Donning their headbands and tie-die shirts, these Swedes will probably even sing the praises of the CCXR to the tune of “Imagine,” by John Lennon. For, you see, Koenigsegg claim that the CCXR is the first supercar ever produced with the environment in mind.
PERFORMANCE OVER POLAR BEARS
So, just what is it that makes the CCXR, a model that looks so very much like the petrol-swilling CCX, a hippie’s best friend? If the car were to come out today, we might assume it has been loaded down with tons of lithium-ion batteries. But remember, this car debuted 10 years ago, when hybrid technology hadn’t begun to creep into the supercar world. No, the Koenigsegg CCXR’s secret lies in the fuel itself: ethanol. That’s right, all of this hullabaloo about being kinder and gentler to the environment stemmed from the model’s ability to run on E85.
While there is plenty of conflicting information out there as to whether ethanol is actually better for the environment than regular petrol, the CCXR boasted one more benefit: power. With new fuel injectors, fuel lines, and piston rings ready to take on the higher-octane fuel, the car now made even more power than before. A lot more, in fact. When running on traditional gasoline, the 4.7-litre V8 produces a healthy 806bhp. Stuff some E85 into it, however, and that rating jumps up to 1018bhp, or more than 200 additional ponies. The result is a claimed 3.1-second 0 to 62mph run, with a top speed of over 400 km/h (249mph).
DON’T DITCH THAT PRIUS JUST YET
The downside? As mentioned earlier, the debate rages on as to whether E85 is actually all that much cleaner than petrol. Also, when the Koenigsegg CCXR runs on ethanol, the engine burns more fuel than on petrol. Environmental crusaders might not be so fond of this model after all. At the end of the day, the CCXR is more notable for its environmentally-friendly ethos than its emissions. And that’s not nothing.
