Aston Martin DBS Superleggera – Italian Performance in a British GT Package

When it debuted in 2018, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera instantly caught the automotive world’s attention. And it was mostly because of the name. Meaning “Super light” in Italian, the name is mostly reserved for such performance-oriented makes as Ducati and Lamborghini. So when Aston Martin, famed for their world-class grand touring cars, applies that name to its new model, it is bound to draw some interest. And the car’s performance didn’t disappoint once the motoring world got their hands on it, even if it doesn’t quite live up to its name.

A Torque Monster

As you can see from its performance specs, the DBS Superleggera came to play. First, there is a lot of power. The 5.2-litre V12 produces 715 bhp at 6500 rpm. Even more impressive, however, is the torque: 663 lb-ft of torque developed from waaay down at 1800 rpm. Now that’s some serious twist. It will need it, however, because, despite its name, this DBS is no lightweight. Sure, Aston tried their best to keep the weight down, and to their credit, they did manage to shave 70kg off of the DB11’s dry weight. Still, at 3,732 lbs, perhaps a better moniker would been “Un Po ‘leggero”.

Routing all of that power to the rear wheels is an 8-speed automatic. And the effect is nothing short of mind-warping, especially when you take the car’s considerable weight into account. The top speed is rated at 211 mph, while the run up to 62 mph takes just 3.4 seconds. Not too shabby for grand tourer!

No Penalty Box

Even though it was built with a focus on handling and speed, the DBS Superleggera is still a grand tourer at heart. Compared to the stripped-out track-oriented models of some competitors, this Aston keeps driver comfort at a much higher priority level. Sure, the ride is a tad stiff, but not punishingly so. And the leather seats offer power adjustment as well as heat and memory settings. Meanwhile, a variety of cabin finishes are available, including satin-finished chrome and ash wood, to make the cockpit a comfortable place to be.
